READ Proverbs 3:1-6

It is not easy in today’s world to be a son who honors God. The secular pressures to prove our “manliness” are extraordinary. Add to that what the feminist movement of the 60’s and 70’s has done to the position of men as leaders, and we can see that it has culminated in that the boys of today are thoroughly confused over the roles they are to live out in the family, in marriage, and in the world in general.

The writer of Proverbs is reminding sons of what God sees as their role in these institutions and where the fulfillment of these roles can lead. Consider these thoughts:

1) Sons, don’t forget what you have been taught (3:1).
What our sons are taught can be spiritually edifying or spiritually nullifying. Fathers, take care… we are the model for our sons in the spiritual and ethical realm.

2) A rich, full life is the reward for the compliant son (3:2).
Doing what is right will bring a satisfaction into your life. You can live life knowing that your heavenly Father is pleased with you.

3) Sons, remember to be loyal to your family, your friends, your church, and most of all, your God (3:3).
Loyalty is expressed in kindness and should always flow from a heart that is right with God.

4) Sons, favor with God and with people will follow you around and a wonderful reputation of integrity will be yours (3:4).

The powerful words of Proverbs 3:5-6 follow these verses. The writer is admonishing the godly son to trust in the Word of God and His understanding to know the right path in life.

PRAY:
Our Father in heaven, help us earthly fathers teach our children the Word of God. Help us model that Word in front of them in every momentum of life. Please empower us to raise up godly sons and grandsons that will follow Your path of manhood. God, we need Your help to do this! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
