READ Psalms 139:23-24
I went on a mission trip to Brazil in 2014. We traveled one day up the Amazon River into the jungle. A stepladder in a big jungle boat gave way with me and I fell and broke my hand. The next day, I went back to the city with John, one of the missionaries. The rest of the team went upriver to the tribal village. I was very disappointed. Even so, God reminded me of some things as I stayed with John and his family waiting on the team to return.
I witnessed a life of obedience and clean living for Christ on the mission field. I watched as John read a Bible story each night to his children. Then he went around the circle and had each one of us name one thing we wanted to thank God for. Next, John had each one of us name something we wanted to ask God for. Then we prayed.
John, in this simple but powerful devotion time, reminded me that it is my responsibility to lead my family. I can’t depend on the church, the staff, or anyone or anything else. John doesn’t have any of those things available to him.
Loving and leading your family by the Word of God with the help of the Holy Spirit is what it means to be a Godly man.
Living the Word before your family is what it means to be a Godly man.
I realized that even though the hospital had x-rayed my broken hand, I was in need of much more. I needed God to look beyond this flesh and show me what was in my heart. I had to confess some things and repent of them. He restored me and reminded me of my responsibility as a husband and father.
I want to be a Deuteronomy 6 Dad. What about you? Are you in need of an x-ray?
God, help me to be a Godly man. Empower me with grace to lead my family. Please work in me so that I can be used of you to read the Scriptures and pray with my family beginning tonight. Help me continue to gather my family together to read and pray. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
