READ Matthew 6:19-21

One Saturday evening, I went into my closet to lay out my clothes for Sunday church. I went to retrieve a cashmere sweater, only to find that a moth had chewed a hole in it. The sweater was ruined. I was reminded of Matthew 6:19 where Jesus warned of earthly treasures. Moth and rust will destroy, and our earthly possessions are fleeting. The Lord teaches us not to store up treasure for ourselves here on earth but to share all we have with others. In doing so, we will have treasure in heaven.

This is contrary to the world around us, however, which would have us to believe that happiness is found in a new luxury car, expensive clothing, or fine jewelry. Turn on the television, and you’ll quickly experience this deception. Be assured, though, all we have comes from The Lord, and we are instructed to be good stewards of that which we’ve been given. This means giving to others – generously and with joy, “…for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Generosity, however, is not merely about giving of our treasures. It’s also about giving of our time and our talents. It’s about making an investment in eternity, for the glory of God! This sometimes means writing a check, but other times it means taking the time to encourage or disciple someone else, or to find a place of service within the body of Christ. Generosity is the employment of everything we’ve been given to make known the name of Jesus!

The Bible tells us that every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17), and Jesus Himself is the giver of life! Therefore, let us all seek to be more like Jesus through our generosity. A wise pastor once said: “We are never more like Jesus than when we give!”

Father, I desire to be a good steward of that which you’ve given to me. Grant me wisdom in how to best use my gifts and talents to make known the name of Jesus! Father, please help me to give generously and with joy, and may it all bring honor and glory to You! In the wonderful name of Jesus, Amen.
