READ John 21:4-11
You have likely heard the saying, “God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.” This is certainly true of the disciples in John chapter 21. Knowing the disciples are empty-handed, Jesus first instructs them to “…cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat” (v.6). The disciples then caught so many fish, they were not able to haul in the catch. God is faithful to equip us when He calls us to a vocation or a task! The provision is His!
Next, the disciples drag the net full of fish onto shore, only to see a charcoal fire “…already laid and fished placed on it, and bread” (v.9). Jesus then invites the disciples to “…bring some of the fish which you have now caught.” (v.10). Verse ten reveals that Christ desires for us to be His co-laborers! He is capable of accomplishing His will without us, but we are invited to participate and to work alongside our Creator! What a privilege! Even though Jesus had supplied the fish and bread before the disciples reached the shore, He invited them to bring their catch too.
Has God been calling you to a particular place of service but you’ve been apprehensive to follow? Do you lack self-confidence in your ability to serve? If so, consider the words of the apostle Paul:
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
To serve God is to faithfully follow Him, with all confidence that He equips the called and that His power is perfected in our weakness!
Father, I desire to co-labor with you, empowered by Your Holy Spirit. Help me to live by faith, not by sight, so that Your power may be perfected in my weakness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
