READ Matthew 26:36-46
Persevere means “to continue, to keep on, to stick with it.” Perseverance is a quality that is missing in lives of many men today. There are not many men that are finishing well. There are not many who are sticking with it, whatever “it” may be. In cities all across America, as soon as things get difficult many men are looking for a way out.
A recent New Your Times article entitled Beyond Marriage, scholars studying low-income to working-class communities have discovered that the women in these communities no longer think it is realistic to depend on the men in their lives. The study reported that these women “have seen or experienced too much divorce, infidelity, substance abuse and other bad behavior to trust or fully rely on their partners.“
If anyone persevered, it was and it is Jesus. He continued, He kept on, and He stuck with it… no matter the cost. Jesus has always been there and will always be there showing us how to persevere. Verse 29 says that “He went a little farther.” The word “farther” means “to go onward” “to pass on.” He is our example in persevering when challenges and difficulties.
How does He continue? How does He make it to the cross to die for the sins of the world? Jesus seeks help from His friends and His Father. In the Garden, sweating blood, He asks His friends to lift up prayers and His Father to let the cup pass. Nevertheless was His pray though! “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8).
Can you go farther…
as a husband to an un-submissive wife?
as the father of a wayward child?
as a single man with sexual temptations?
as a leader in a challenging situation?
as a Pastor in a carnal church?
As a matter of fact you can! But, the only way to go farther is to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus. Get some men around you that will pray you through unlike the disciples. Press into God’s will and be obedient!
Lord, help me be a man who presses in and presses through no matter the challenge. Thank You Jesus for not only being my example of how to persevere but also empowering my inner man with Your grace to to help in my time of need. God, no matter what I’m facing… not my will, but Your will!
