Who is qualified to serve? When am I able to serve? What should I do?
All great questions. The answer is found in the first part of today’s verse, “A man’s gift makes room for him.” So, we need to discuss the gift a man is given and why it makes room.
Gift(s) – We learn more about the gift(s) that Solomon is mentioning in Romans 12:6-8. These gifts are given at salvation according to the Lord’s choice by the Holy Spirit.
- Exhortation – encouragement, comfort, counsel to accomplish God’s best
- Giving – time, talent, treasures
- Leadership – set direction and motivate
- Mercy – sensitive towards those who are suffering / compassion
- Prophecy – speak the message of God to the people
- Service – identify undone tasks in God’s work and do them
- Teaching – instruct others in the Bible
Room – Why do we need room? Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that each person is given different gifts and much like the different parts of the body. We are to come together and use our gifts to accomplish one purpose – God’s Will! The room that is created for each man also indicates there is space at the table for everyone. All are needed and there is a specific purpose and place for everyone to serve.
As Henry Blackaby would say, “find out where God is working and join Him.” God wants to use you for great and mighty things. Start using your gifts today.

O God, may Your will be done in my life today. Help me go from asking for things from You, to allowing You to do Your work through me. I thank You that I’m not needed to accomplish Your will, but rather You allow me to participate in Your plan. Use me today! In Christ’s name – AMEN.
