READ James 1:14-15, 4:1-3

We need to understand that there is a battle. And the battle is within. There was a time when people had to go looking for things that would fulfill their sensual desires; not anymore!  It’s everywhere!

James also speaks of being dragged away and enticed, which pictures the idea of being caught in a trap. However, the hunter disguises the deadly poison with attractive bait. We must believe God’s warnings and understand that Satan is the hunter. His intention is to cause us shame and destroy our effectiveness for Christ. Be aware that behind the lie is a liar and behind the trap is a trapper.

So, where do these fights come from? James 4:1-3 says they come from within, “the desires within you.”  They are desires with hedonistic, bodily appetites for self-gratification. Our lusts are always lining up their forces against the Spirit within us.  They are always fighting fiercely for position and will never accept defeat.

Our raging desires can take on many forms: revenge, greed, alcohol, drugs, pornography, etc.  The battle is over who will control the “inner man.” Have you ever noticed that when an addict tries to change, he often substitutes one crutch for another?  Unless we deal with the root, not just the fruit, there will be no victory, no transformation.

The more these selfish desires are fed, the stronger they remain, insisting on more.  Walter Brueggemann said, “I have found myself discovering that mostly I do not need more advice, but strength.  I do not need new information, but the courage, freedom, and authority to act on what I have already been given in the gospel.”

It is usually not a matter of knowledge. Men know the difference between right and wrong. It is a matter of desire, motivation, and willingness to do what is right.  Obviously, we cannot do this in our own strength.  We must cry out to Jesus for help and rely upon His strength!

PRAY:
God help me to deny myself and take up my cross to follow Your desires. I am nothing without You! May I give way to You in each area of my life. I want to win as a man and I can’t do that without You working in and through me for Your good pleasure. In the Name of Jesus, Amen!
