READ Psalm 147:3

How do you feel as a father? Inadequate at times? Overwhelmed most of the time? Yet, the fulfillment of being a father cannot be properly put into words, without experiencing its raw reality. No doubt, struggles in fatherhood are an opportunity to approach your heavenly Father in humble dependence in need of wisdom, faith, and encouragement. God the Father’s character is the example for earthly fathers to aspire to become.

It’s more difficult to grow as a father if, while you were growing up, your own father was absent or unengaged in your life. This cannot become an excuse for bad fathering, but it can be a point to address past pain. Without the medicinal application of forgiveness to a hurting heart and emotional wholeness from grace, there remains a hole in the heart.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

Dads who have not engaged in a spiritual, mental, and emotional process of inner healing express their pain in outward frustration, anger, and even depression. For fathers to father well, they must be fathered well. Praise the Lord if your father on earth accurately represents your Father in heaven. If not, you can appeal straight to heaven and receive God’s healing power. Wise fathers process past pain, so their heart is healthy to love well.

Through Christ you can break the bondage of unfaithful fathering. Humility is the key, because it channels a man’s strength into service and it molds his power into patience. A spirit-filled father is first concerned for his wife and children and places his own needs on the shelf of unselfishness for a season. Faithful fathers look out for their family first and defer their desires to later. Dads earn respect through humble service in the home.

PRAY:
Heavenly Father, I want a clear conscience. Reveal to me any hurt I may be harboring towards You or my earthly father. He us move past the pain and set us free in Jesus Name!
