READ James 2:14

Several years ago, my wife and I participated in a motorcycle ride that was a fundraiser for a women’s shelter on the south side of Atlanta, Georgia. At the time, I owned a Suzuki Intruder 1500 which served as the cruiser we enjoyed traveling on so much. My wife and I are fairly small people in stature and the motorcycle hardly recognized we were on it. It toted us with ease, and when called on, at high rates of speed. Little did we know when we registered for that ride we would have an experience we would never forget.

Half way through the ride we pulled into the Atlanta Motor Speedway where we were directed to park our motorcycles on the infield near pit row. Unbeknown to us, arrangements had been made for all of the registered riders to race around the racetrack. I will never forget how exhilarating it was to pull up to the starting line and take off around the track as fast as we could go. At speeds up to 120 M.P.H., we were around the track in no time and being waved back into the infield.

As exciting as it was, I was just as disappointed. One trip around was all we were given and it just seemed to go by too fast. All I could think about at the end was how and what I would have done differently if I had known I was only going to get one lap around. Life is very much like that one lap. James wrote in his epistle, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (2:14).

I am not sure how you have been spending your one lap, but from here on out might I encourage you not to waste it, but spend it in pursuit of the Lord Jesus Christ. Eternal investments will never leave you with disappointments.

PRAY:
Lord, help me live every day with eternity in mind. Give me wisdom and discernment to make the most of the each day I have to live with You, my family, my church to the ends of the earth. Amen.
