READ Deuteronomy 30:18-20; Romans 3:23 & 6:23
As men, most of us hate the feeling of losing and cringe against the thought of surrender. I recently read a quote by Winston Churchill in his famous speech during WWII when he said…
“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
That get’s my blood pumping and probably does yours as well. As men, we simply don’t like to surrender and many of us are willing to fight to our last breath like William Wallace when he cried out “FREEDOM” just before the executioner’s axe fell.
UNFORTUNATELY, men can often carry this passion into their perspective of Jesus Christ and Eternity. The reality is that we are facing a battle against overwhelming forces and can never hope to press our way to victory with any measure of willpower and effort. But, that is exactly what we are trying to do when we attempt to WORK our way into God’s good favor or try to WILL ourselves to be good.
In the Bible, Isaiah tells us that, “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. (Isaiah 64:6, NIV) and the Apostle Paul clearly points out that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.(Rom 3:23)” and that, “The wages of sin is death. (Rom. 6:23a). No matter how strong and courageous we think we are, in our own effort we just can’t overcome our sin to satisfy the requirements of the Law and can never hope to escape the judgment and the wrath of God.
The GOOD NEWS is that we don’t have to fight the battle for our eternity because the war has already been fought, the battle is over, and we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, his life, death, burial, and resurrection, He conquered our sin, fulfilled the requirements of the Law, and satisfied the judgment and the sin debt that we could never hope to pay. Jesus tells us, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life . . . no man comes unto the father except through me.”
You can only do one of two things . . . trust in your own effort and cling to your willpower and determination to “Never Surrender” OR you can trust in God, surrendering yourself to His will and accept the victory that is only found in Jesus Christ. Just remember, the default setting is “Never Surrender” so don’t get caught in the trap that not choosing is an option. Just as Moses challenged, “Today I set before you Life and Death . . . now choose life.” (Deut. 30:19)
Dear God, I do recognize You as God and the sovereign ruler of Your creation. I realize that I have not lived up to the standards of holiness that You have established and that without Your Son Jesus Christ, I know that I would stand condemned by the law and remain under Your judgment for my sin. Right here and right now I surrender. Thank You for Your mercy, grace, forgiveness, and victory. Use my life for Your glory. AMEN!
