READ James 1:19-20

How was conflict handled in your home when you were growing up?

Was there open discussion or withdrawal?

Were there attacks or any discussion of conflict? 

Was the cold shoulder given?

Was there pretending that nothing happened? 

Was there discussion quietly after everyone had calmed down?

Was there nagging until the other person was finally willing to talk?

Were snide comments and sarcasm common?

How is conflict handled in your home now?

Is it like when you were growing up? 

Would you like to improve the way you handle conflict? 

One way is to deal with anger.

The source of our anger is within each of us.  No one else can make us angry.  Conflict occurs when our desires aren’t fulfilled – when we don’t get what we want. 

1) Our rights have been violated.  By the way, if you are a believer, you gave up your rights to the Lord Jesus when you gave your life to Him and He gave you a new life. 

2) Our expectations haven’t been met.  Only Jesus can meet and exceed all of our expectations. 

3) We have been hurt.  We are sinful people in need of a Savior.  We hurt people and people hurt us. He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord our Healer.

Our unfulfilled desires lead to fighting and quarrelling and may result in anger.  For conflict to be resolved, both husband and wife must be committed to oneness. 

Bryan Loritts says: “Anger undealt with kills relationships and marriages.”  It shows up in two ways: loud and ugly or silent and deadly.  Ephesians 4:26 says to not let the sun go down on your anger.  Don’t let anger bring your marriage down.  Fight for your marriage. Don’t fight each other.

PRAY:
Lord, forgive me when I’ve been angry with my wife.  Remind me that I have no rights that she can violate since I gave my life to You.  Help us to be committed to oneness so we can resolve conflict and not run from it.  Father, show Yourself to be strong in my marriage.
