READ Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Who’s telling your children about God? Who’s teaching your children about life? Who’s helping them work through issues? When I think about Deuteronomy 6:5-7, I realize the standard is high. I should be teaching my children God’s Word all of the time.  In 2009, through a series of revival meetings and a pastor friend of mine, I heard God speaking about what it means to be a father.  I realized I had been “winging it”. I wasn’t being intentional about teaching my children. I began shepherding their hearts and leading my family in devotions.

I have two sons and two daughters.  My wife and I decided to take each one on “The Age 12 Trip.”  We got the idea from Matt Friedeman’s book “Discipleship in the Home.” At age 12, the same sex parent takes the child out for a fun, instructional, and gift-giving trip.  We have 12 people write letters to them describing what God has done and is going to do in their lives in the years to come.  We give them 12 gifts that have a special meaning.  We give them a life lesson from God’s Word.  The Age 12 Trip is a starting point for many conversations we are going to have with our children.

I believe the calling and responsibility of a father is high.  Remember Deuteronomy 6?  The standard is high.  I believe that by doing things like The Age 12 Trip helps set our children up for success against the road hazards of life.

I want to challenge and encourage you to do something.  Whether it’s the Age 12 Trip or Passport to Purity, do something.  Open up the Bible and teach it to your children.  Talk to them about this life and the hope that is in Jesus.  Do something.  Be intentional and proactive.  God will be honored and He will help you. Do something.

Remember Deuteronomy 6? The standard is high. Will you do something?

Father, thank you for the gift of children.  They truly are a blessing from You.  Remind me of the great privilege and responsibility I have to shepherd their hearts and to shape them into great men and women of God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Be intentional and proactive. God will be honored and He will help you. Do something. @Real_Momentum App #honoryourfathertoday

What a great post! Intentionality doesn’t come easy, takes a lot of effort and time but is so worth it. Thanks for the insights.
